The Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission (RSIEC) has announced that elections for the 23 local government councils in the state will be held on August 9, 2025.
The Chairman of the Commission, Justice Adolphus Enebeli (Rtd.), made the announcement on Wednesday during a stakeholders’ meeting at the commission’s headquarters in Port Harcourt.
The August election was necessitated by the annulment last Friday of the October 5, 2025, election by the Supreme Court.

The Supreme Court’s verdict created a vacuum at the local government level, as the chairmen handed over to the Heads of Local Government Administration (HLGA) following orders from the State Governor, Sir Siminalayi Fubara.
RSIEC had on Tuesday scheduled a general stakeholders’ meeting to unveil the timetable and guidelines for the 2025 Local Government Elections in the state, which took place today.
Key stakeholders expected at the meeting include leaders of registered political parties, traditional rulers, security agencies, religious organizations, media representatives, professional bodies, civil society groups, NGOs, community-based groups, and the electorate.
