Selenium is a mineral that may provide different health benefits. For example, it may help with cardiovascular health, cognitive function, and thyroid health. The optimal daily amount of selenium for most adults is 55 mcg, and selenium deficiency is rare.  It can help improve cognition, immune system function, and fertility. People can get selenium from foods that contain it, and they can also add it to food or consume it as a supplement. However, more research is needed to determine whether or not taking selenium supplements can actually reduce disease risk or help prevent health problems. The body typically stores some selenium in human tissue, mostly in skeletal muscles, after getting it from foods containing trace amounts. Brazil nuts, seafoods and organ meats are the richest food sources of selenium. Other sources include muscle meats, cereals and other grains, and dairy products. The amount of selenium in drinking water is not nutritionally significant in most geographic regions. You’ll get some selenium from a fresh banana. A small banana that weighs about four ounces offers about 1.2 micrograms of selenium. One cup of diced raw mango sneaks one microgram of selenium into your diet. Avocados add a tiny amount of selenium into your meal and provide. Some vegetables that contain more than 2 micrograms of selenium per cupful include raw broccoli, cooked plantains, cooked Brussels sprouts, cooked fresh spinach and shelled soybeans. Asparagus provides close to 4 micrograms in four cooked spears. The amount of selenium in food depends on the concentration of the soil and water where it grew. People can also add the mineral to foods or consume it as a supplement. In extreme cases, selenium overdose could lead to kidney failure, heart failure, and death. Selenium supplements can also interact with some medications. It is therefore very important to be careful when combining selenium with other medications.
