The Unity Schools Old Students Association (USOSA) plans to launch a N500 million Education Relief Fund as an immediate intervention fund for distressed unity colleges and students in the country.

Speaking after his emergence as the new president-general of the association, Seyi Gambo, said that critical challenges affecting unity schools included 18.4 million out-of-school children nationally, 14.4 million substance abuse users among students aged 15 and above, as well as land encroachment affecting FGC Kano and FGC Kaduna.

Gambo, who said, graduating from a unity school was a privilege that came with lifelong responsibilities, added that the responsibilities extended to family, fellow alumni, the country, successor generations and the Creator.

He said the new administration, in conjunction with the Federal Ministry of Education, would conduct a national infrastructure audit of unity schools, as well as a comprehensive facility review and develop an intervention roadmap.

The president-general added that the association planned to make a joint presentation to the National Assembly on national education policy, unity school security and funding. He stated that it would deliver Independent Power Projects (IPPs) to 17 schools and resettle displaced campuses within one year.

Meanwhile, the Unity Schools Old Students Association (USOSA) has concluded its elections during its 50th Plenary and elective Annual General Meeting (AGM), held at the Nigerian Universities Commission (NUC), Abuja, with Seyi Gambo emerging as the new President-General of the association in a landslide victory.

According to the results released by the Electoral Committee (ELCOM), Gambo polled 305 votes to defeat his opponent, Chinedu Amure, the incumbent Vice-President-General (VPG), who secured 212 votes.

Other results declared by the Electoral Committee were as follows: The position of Vice-President-General, contested by Jayeola Adebola and Rufun Ibrahim Jauro, was keenly contested. Adebola polled 287 votes to defeat Jauro, who secured 233 votes.

Favour Sabo Michael was elected Financial Secretary with 345 votes, defeating Semirat Ajide, who polled 173 votes.

For the position of Treasurer, Hamman Adil Adamu was elected unopposed. Kester Idogho was elected Assistant Secretary-General with 354 votes, against Hauwa Idi Jimeta, who polled 170 votes.

The office of Secretary-General went to Idoreyen A. Ebong, who was elected unopposed.

The results released by the Electoral Committee showed that there were two invalid votes for the Assistant Secretary-General position, while six invalid votes were recorded for the Vice-President-General position and another six for the President-General position, bringing the total number of invalid votes to 14.

The results were signed by the Secretary of the Electoral Committee, Tayelolu Ojo, and its Chairman, Ahmed Tijjani Lawal, on October 24, 2026.

The election ushers in a new leadership for USOSA.

The newly elected officers are expected to work with members and stakeholders to strengthen the association and advance its objectives of promoting unity, cooperation and development among alumni of Nigeria’s Unity Schools.
