Lessons we learned from our parents

It is said that children learn from watching and observing others, especially their parents. For most of them, their parents are their role models, and many children wish to be like their parents. OLUWABUKOLA OSHOKO spoke to some Ibadan children to enquire what special things they learned from their parents. Their views:

Wonuola Bolade, 8 years old

What I’ve learned from my parents is that I should never give up. My mom taught me this lesson, and I learned it by watching her actions. She always tries her best and does not give up easily. I have used this lesson many times. Sometimes, when I don’t get what I want, I keep trying until I get it. This has taught me to be patient, strong, and determined. I’ve never told my mom thank you for teaching me this important lesson, but whenever I use it, I feel happy and proud of myself. I believe this lesson will help me a lot when I grow up because I know that I should always keep trying, even when things are difficult.

Idunnuoluwa Ajijola, 10 years old

What I’ve learnt from my parents is to respect my elders. My mother taught me this lesson when I was small. She told me that I should always respect my elders and show them good manners. I’ve made use of this lesson until now. I practise it in church and at school by respecting older people around me. I’ve told my mother, “Thank you for teaching me this lesson,” and she said, “You’re welcome.” I believe this lesson will help me as I grow up because I’ll continue to respect my elders, and they will know me as a good and respectful person. I’ll also teach my younger brothers and sisters this important lesson so that they can learn to respect their elders too.

Olatunji Opemiposi, 11 years old

I learned how to be respectful and kind. My dad taught me this important lesson. I learned it through his words and by watching his actions. He showed me that being respectful and kind to others is very important. This lesson has helped me to be more helpful and to become a better person in life. I make use of the lesson both at home and in school. Whenever I make use of the lesson, I notice that people become closer to me. I’ve never told my dad or let him know that I’ve been making use of the lesson he taught me, but I am grateful for what he has taught me. I believe the lesson will help me become a better person in life.

Michael Omenaihe, 10 years old

A very important lesson I’ve learned from my parent is hard work and diligence. My daddy taught me through his actions. I believe this lesson is important because it will help me in the future. I practise it at home and encourage my siblings to do the same. I also teach my fellow students at school. I told my dad that I use his lesson, and he was very happy. I felt proud of myself. I believe it’ll help me become better as I grow up.

Oyinlola Samuel, 13 years old

One important lesson learned from my parents is being kind. My mom taught me this and told me that sharing is part of being kind. It has taught me how to share and relate with others kindly. I practice it at home and at school. For example, I share my pens when I have two. I feel happy whenever I’m kind to others. I’ve also thanked my mom for teaching me this lesson. I believe it’ll help me relate well with others as I grow up.
