3 fashion designers face trial over alleged armed robbery, receiving stolen items

Court, fashion designersTHREE fashion designers, who allegedly robbed a woman of her cell phones valued N164,000 with cutlasses and other dangerous weapons, on Wednesday appeared before an Ikeja Chief Magistrates’ Court, Lagos.

The accused fashion designers; –Taiye Azeez, 19; Kehinde Kareem, 19; and Salaudeen Adam, 20 — who all reside at Dopemu area of Lagos, are facing a four-count charge bordering on conspiracy, robbery and possession of dangerous weapons.

Police Prosecutor Edet Okoi told the court that the accused fashion designers committed the offences against another man still at large on Jan. 1 on Onieaya Road, Dopemu, Lagos.

Okoi said Azeez and Adam, who were armed with cutlasses and some other dangerous weapons, robbed the complainant, Mrs Faith John of her iPhone 6 and Tecno phone all valued at N164, 000.

“The complainant was on her way home from a vigil when she was attacked by the accused, and disposed her of her belongings.”

Okoi alleged that the duo later sold the phones to Kareem, knowing full well that the phones were stolen.

The offences contravened Sections 296, 297, 299 and 328 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Section 297 stipulates seven years jail term for robbery.

The accused fashion designers pleaded not guilty to the charge.

The Magistrate, Mrs O.A Layinka, granted Azeez and Adam bail in the sum of N150, 000 each with two sureties each in like sum, while Kareem was granted a N100, 000 bail with one surety.

Layinka said the sureties should be blood relations of the accused persons.

In addition, the sureties must be gainfully employed with an evidence of tax payment to the Lagos State Government.

Layinka also directed that the case file should be duplicated and a copy sent to the State Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) for advice before adjourning the case until April 30.
