2027: Ohanaeze backs South-East ex-govs’ support for Tinubu’s second term

The apex Igbo socio-cultural organisation, Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide, has endorsed the position of the South-East Former Governors Forum backing President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for a second term in 2027.

The group threw its weight behind the forum led by Senator David Nweze Umahi, describing the initiative as a strategic platform to advance the interests of the South-East region.

In a statement issued by Deputy President-General, Okechukwu Isiguzoro, and National Spokesman, Thompson Ohia, the organisation urged the forum to expand its membership to include former Igbo governors from Delta and Rivers.

Ohanaeze described the South-East Former Governors Forum as a non-partisan body focused on promoting infrastructural development and economic growth in the region, noting that its emergence offers renewed hope for Ndigbo both at home and in the diaspora.

The group dismissed criticisms trailing the formation of the forum, attributing them to “external enemies” attempting to sow division within the Igbo community.

It emphasised that partnerships with the Federal Government remain essential to addressing longstanding developmental challenges in the region, particularly in infrastructure and economic advancement.

Referencing historical grievances dating back to the Nigerian Civil War, Ohanaeze stressed the need for sustained collaboration to address what it described as decades of neglect in the South-East.

The organisation also reiterated its recognition of seven Igbo-speaking states, including communities in Delta and Rivers, and commended attendees at the forum’s inaugural meeting in Enugu. Among those acknowledged were Okezie Ikpeazu, Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi, Chris Ngige, Sullivan Chime, and Martin Elechi.

Ohanaeze concluded that the forum’s endorsement of Tinubu’s re-election bid represents a strategic move aimed at strengthening ties between the South-East and the Federal Government, with the goal of delivering tangible development and prosperity to the region.
