This year’s carnival is set to be a grand celebration of Nigerian culture, offering something for every participant. If you’re interested in exploring the history of Carnival Calabar, its events, or its significant impact on Nigeria’s tourism sector, there’s plenty to discover.
Since its inception in 2004 by former Governor Donald Duke, Carnival Calabar has transformed into a significant tourism attraction, aimed at enhancing Cross River State’s cultural and economic landscape.
Initially launched on January 1, 2004, the carnival was strategically moved to December in 2005 for greater alignment with the festive season. By 2007, it gained international acclaim, attracting visitors from around the world.
A significant achievement occurred in 2010 when it was recognised as one of the world’s top 10 most spectacular carnivals by the International Festivals and Events Association (IFEA).
The Most Influential People of African Descent (MIPAD) also recognised Carnival Calabar as one of the largest and most iconic carnivals worldwide. This acknowledgment highlights its role in showcasing African culture and attracting millions of visitors each year.
The evolution of Carnival Calabar has been propelled by the contributions of various governors of Cross River State:
– Donald Duke (2004-2007): Launched the event to enhance tourism and improve the economy, drawing visitors from within Africa and beyond.
– Liyel Imoke (2007-2015): Continued its legacy by introducing more bands and highlighting the state’s cultural richness.
– Ben Ayade (2015-2023): Innovated the carnival experience with events like the Bikers’ Parade and Beach Carnival while emphasizing its potential for economic growth.
– Bassey Otu (2023-present): Introduced “Traces of Time” as the 2025 theme, along with new events and an increased focus on private sector investment and digital outreach.
These leaders have collectively positioned Carnival Calabar as a vital cultural and economic event in the region.
The carnival has now evolved into a month-long celebration featuring vibrant parades, captivating performances, fashion shows, and lively street parties.
Its impact on Cross River State’s economy is significant, fostering tourism, job creation, and the showcasing of local heritage.
Notably, Carnival Calabar underwent transformations from 2020 to 2025. The 2020 edition faced challenges due to the COVID-19 pandemic and the #EndSARS protests, leading to a remarkable return in 2022 with a fresh focus on agro-industrialization.
Success continued in 2023 and 2024, with significant attendance growth.
In 2023, approximately 279,486 spectators attended, enjoying events like the Battle of the Bands and the Queen of Humanity Pageant.
The 2024 carnival demonstrated further success with a 42% attendance increase, drawing over 450,000 onsite spectators and reaching 1.2 billion viewers globally through DSTV and streaming platforms.
Themed “Our Shared Prosperity,” the 2024 carnival encompassed a wide range of activities, including the Grand Street Carnival, cultural parades, music concerts, and pool parties, effectively showcasing Nigeria’s diverse cultural tapestry.
Some standout achievements of the 2024 carnival included:
– Calas Vegas Band’s Dominance: The Calas Vegas Band secured the overall Street Carnival title for the second consecutive year, demonstrating creativity and innovation.
-Economic Impact: The carnival generated an estimated N14.06 billion in revenue, further underlining its significance as a catalyst for economic development in Cross River State.
