Zamfara’s security not about me — Matawalle

Minister of State for Defence, Alhaji Bello Matawalle, has denied a viral social media report claiming he said Zamfara’s security initiative would not succeed without his involvement.

In a statement signed by his media aide, Ahmed Dan-Wudil, the former Zamfara governor described the report as a “malicious fabrication” aimed at smearing his reputation and undermining ongoing Federal Government security efforts.

Matawalle said he never granted any interview making such a statement, explaining that his only criticism of Governor Dauda Lawal relates to what he described as the governor’s “weak strategy and refusal to cooperate” with federal authorities on security coordination.

He criticised Governor Lawal for excluding him and other key stakeholders from security planning, despite his role as a defence minister and former state leader. Matawalle noted that the governor’s decision to meet only with the Minister of Defence, Mohammed Badaru, without involving him, was “unfortunate.”

“We cannot politicise security. This is the time for collective effort,” he said.

The minister also faulted the state government for allegedly deploying security operatives without proper communication with Abuja, calling it a setback in the ongoing fight against banditry.

He accused political actors of sponsoring misinformation to heighten tension in Zamfara, urging the media—especially Premium Times—to verify claims before publication.

“As someone deeply involved in national security, I have no reason to sabotage any governor’s efforts, let alone in my own state where insecurity has become a national issue due to poor governance,” he said.

Matawalle reaffirmed the Federal Government’s determination to restore peace, return displaced residents to their farms and communities, and strengthen security presence across troubled areas. He added that the APC-led government remains committed to solving Nigeria’s pressing challenges.

The minister also defended President Bola Tinubu’s leadership, saying his commitment to security, stability and economic recovery has boosted confidence in his administration.
