Rotary Club of Ibadan Jericho Metro on Tuesday administered the polio vaccine to children as part of activities marking the World Polio Day.
The club also donated drugs, mosquito nets to nursing mothers, while sensitising them on the importance of polio immunisation.
The Club President, Mr Damilola Olaleye, said the aim of the programme is to sensitise mothers about polio vaccination.
Olaleye said the exercise is all about eradication of polio, adding that Rotary wants to bring polio to zero level in all their communities through sensitisation.
“We at Rotary Club of Ibadan Jericho Metro put together our team to ensure that we vaccinate people in our neighbourhoods and we attended to people of Eleyele Public Health Centre, Ibadan.
“Today is commemorating World Polio Day and we are vaccinating babies because we want them to be free from polio.
“As Rotary Club, we try to sensitise people, checking of blood pressure, HIV test, malaria screening, cervical/breast/prostate cancer screening, eye cataract test, dental care, drugs prescription and give them adequate drugs that will sustain themselves and apart from that, we still give them mosquito nets for mothers and their babies because a baby that is taken care of will be free from malaria and other diseases that may endanger them.
“We need to educate nursing mothers to let them know that polio vaccines don’t kill, and that is why enlightenment is important to us and it is very necessary to do all these to help the people.
Also, the president encouraged the government at all levels to partner with Rotary Club so as to ensure that more people are reached in order to eradicate polio.
In her remarks, the Officer in-charge of Eleyele Public Health Centre, Esther Amoo lauded the club for the gesture, noting that it would go a long way in improving the health status of the beneficiaries.
