World Cancer Day: Rotary club sensitises women on self-examination, organises free screening

In commemoration of World Cancer Day 2022, women in Rotary District 9125, Oyo State Chapter has organised a sensitisation programme and free breast cancer screening for women in Ibadan.

The health talk and screening exercise was held on Friday at Aperin Oniyere Primary Heath Centre, Ibadan.

Speaking at the event, the Oyo State representative, Women in Rotary District 9125, Folake Ladeinde, explained that the event was organised in commemoration of World Cancer Day, adding that the initiative was aimed at reducing the death rate in the society.

She added that the sensitisation was also meant to orientate women on breast self-examination which ac- cording to her would help in ensuring early detection of lumps in the breast.

According to her, early detection of lumps would go a long way in helping the affected persons in commencing treatment early.

She added that some lumps were mere abnormal growth in the breast which could be removed through surgical operation.

She said that the women in Rotary was a group of female Rotarians and Rotaractors established to educate women and add value to Rotary Club as women.

Ladeinde added that the theme for this year’s celebration is “Close the Care Gap” had the aim of reaching out to women who would educate other women on breast cancer examination.

The beneficiaries were sensitised by a nurse, Olufunmilayo Ogunbanwo, who demonstrated how the breast could be examined to the beneficiaries.

Ogunbanwo advised that breast examination should be done once every month.

Ogunbanwo who is also a member of Rotary Club advised women to reduce the consumption of food with preservatives and oil in a bid to reduce the chance of having breast cancer.

One of the beneficiaries of the screening, Mrs Shakirat Akande, appreciated the club for the gesture adding that the initiative had widened her knowledge about breast cancer.
