THE president of the Outdoor Advertising Association of Nigeria (OAAN), Mr Emma Ajufo, has, again, called on state governments to prevail on their outdoor regulatory agencies, to bring down levies charged on billboards in the state, to enhance the quick recovery of the ailing sector.
Making the appeal in an exclusive chat with Brands & Marketing, recently, Ajufo argued that huge costs on signages, especially those on vacant ones, by states’ outdoor agencies, had continued to take its toll on the business throughout the country, especially in Lagos and Abuja,
According to him, the sector, which had, hitherto, been the choice of the average advertisers in the past, could now only boast of not more than ten serious advertisers as its patrons.
While expressing his delight that thing had started picking up in the sector, after the crisis it experienced due to the advent of COVID 19, the OAAN boss however believed such recovery could be fast-tracked, with supports from the different state governments.
“Things are picking up. Our industry is a reflection of the larger economy. When the economy is not doing too well, we, also, will not do too well. But from the feelers that I’m getting now, and from my discussions with members, it is obvious that things are picking up, and the sector is gradually recovering from the COVID-19 shock.
“But it will be better if the fee that we are being made to pay is a little bit reduced to encourage people to come back. And that’s why anytime we have the opportunity, we appeal to the signage agencies to help us out.
“If Lagos, for instance, stop charging for vacant sites, we’ll be able to reduce our prices and that will encourage many advertisers to come back. We actually need a lot of people to come back to our platform.
“There was a time that even fashion designers were on our platform. But now, you can count the number of advertisers on our platform on your fingers,” he added.
