Venturing into Afrocentric fashion can be a deeply personal and meaningful journey, driven by a variety of factors and motivations and one Nigerian fashion designer is set to change narratives with her unique creative approach.
Speaking to Nigerian Tribune, Dolapo Aboderin, the creative behind the Agbekeartistry fashion brand, spoke about her humble beginnings in Ibadan, the Oyo State capital and how she was able to make a name for herself in the industry.
She said, “There was always a cultural connection. I started in July 2015 from my family house in Ibadan with the dream of promoting African culture through fashion design. I have a strong personal connection to African culture, heritage, and identity. Venturing into Afrocentric fashion is my own way of expressing and celebrating our cultural roots, reclaiming and honouring our heritage through the creative expression.”
Speaking further, she highlighted her passion for fashion, coupled with representation and diversity.
“I have a strong passion for fashion and design, combined with a desire to explore and showcase the unique aesthetics and craftsmanship of African textiles and traditions. Venturing into Afrocentric fashion allows me to merge my love for fashion with a deeper appreciation for African culture and artistry.
“In an industry often dominated by Western aesthetics and standards, I was motivated to promote greater diversity, representation, and inclusivity in fashion. Venturing into Afrocentric fashion allows me to amplify diverse voices, challenge stereotypes, and promote a more inclusive and equitable fashion landscape.”
Stressing the need for entrepreneurs to always pursue their goals, she said, “I saw an opportunity to fill a niche in the market and meet the growing demand for Afrocentric fashion globally. Venturing into Afrocentric fashion allows me to leverage my entrepreneurial skills and creativity to build a brand that resonates with a diverse audience and makes a positive impact.
“I was driven by a desire to make a positive impact on society and contribute to the economic empowerment of African communities. Venturing into Afrocentric fashion allows me to support local artisans, promote sustainable development, and create economic opportunities for individuals and communities across Africa and the African diaspora.
“Overall, venturing into Afrocentric fashion was a deep fulfilling and purpose-driven endeavor, rooted in a passion for creativity, culture, and community. My journey in Afrocentric fashion has the potential to inspire, empower, and uplift individuals and communities around the world.“
