Why I Switched from Sciences to the Finances- Otun Hamed

In our twenties, a dynamic and energetic phase unfolds, allowing us to evolve into our dream selves, as aptly put by Otun Hamed: “These years are the gap between childhood dreams and adulthood reality.”

In many Nigerian secondary schools, students are required to choose between sciences, arts, or commercial classes in Senior Class 1. For most, this decision marks the commencement of their career paths. However, there exists a multitude of students who, at various points—before, during, or after university—discover their true selves and choose to switch careers in pursuit of personal interests and talents. Otun Hamed is a testament to this journey.

Hamed unearthed his entrepreneurial flair during his second year at the University of Ibadan. Selling items like wristwatches and slippers to fellow students and those in other institutions, he encountered the inherent frustrations that come with entrepreneurship. Yet, these challenges became stepping stones, teaching him the invaluable lesson of failing forward in the business world.

With dedication and time, experience blossomed. By the time Hamed graduated, he had officially registered two businesses: Gadget Cartel and Media Cartel. This marked the commencement of his entrepreneurial vision.

Upon completing the mandatory National Youth Service Corps, Hamed took a deliberate step towards establishing a solid foundation for his career. Despite his initial entrepreneurial endeavors, he chose to study Accounting, further solidifying his position in the realm of finances. It was a strategic move that reflected his commitment to a well-rounded professional journey.
