The Speaker of the Rivers State House of Assembly, Martin Amaewhule, has announced that he has joined the All Progressives Congress (APC), saying he left the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) because of internal divisions.

Amaewhule made the announcement on Friday during plenary, where he and 15 other lawmakers formally defected from the PDP to the APC.

Tribune Online reports that a total of 16 lawmakers, led by the Speaker, dumped the PDP for the APC.

Explaining his move, Amaewhule said he has already notified his ward chairman of his decision and is taking steps to secure his APC membership card.

Amaewhule stated that he is pleased to join the APC, adding that the move would enable him and his colleagues to align with President Bola Tinubu’s administration.

He said, “Distinguished colleagues, very happily, let me announce to honourable members that your Speaker, Rt. Hon. Martin Chike Amaewhule, has decided and has indeed written to my ward chairman of my decision to leave the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

“Distinguished colleagues, APC is my new party. I will do all that is needed to ensure that the party card of the All Progressives Congress is issued to me in no time.

“But as I speak today, I am a member of the All Progressives Congress, and I’m happy to be a member of the APC so that we can join forces with Mr. President.

Amaewhule praised the President for what he described as significant efforts to address security challenges and for showing support to Rivers State.

According to him, the President has also created opportunities for Rivers people to participate in national governance.

He continued, “Mr President is doing so much for this country. President Bola Tinubu means well for Nigeria. He’s tackling the issues of security. The President has shown love to Rivers State.”

The Speaker said he is delighted to fully identify with the ruling party so he can openly support the President’s agenda.

He maintained that divisions within the PDP were the primary reason for his departure.

“Mr President is helping Rivers people to be part of the governance of this country. So I’m delighted to be part of the All Progressives Congress so that we can support Mr. President right inside the APC. But the major reason for leaving the PDP is because of the division in the party,” Amaewhule concluded.
