Tribune Online reports that Brian Thompson was fatally shot on Wednesday morning in Midtown Manhattan, New York, in what police have described as a “brazen, targeted attack.”

According to the New York Police Department (NYPD), the arrest marks a significant breakthrough in a manhunt that spanned the East Coast.

The suspect was apprehended at a McDonald’s in Altoona, Pennsylvania, on Monday morning. “He was sitting there eating,” Joseph Kenny, the NYPD’s chief of detectives, said during a briefing.

In this article, Tribune Online examines what you should know about the suspect.

1. Background and Education

Luigi Mangione, 26, hails from a wealthy family in Maryland. He attended an elite all-boys high school in Baltimore, where he graduated as valedictorian. He later earned undergraduate and graduate degrees in computer science from the Ivy League University of Pennsylvania. While at university, he was involved in gaming clubs and worked as a data engineer.

2. Family Connections

Mangione’s father, Nick Mangione, is a successful real estate developer renowned for the Turf Valley Resort in Maryland. Additionally, one of his cousins is a Republican state legislator in Maryland, highlighting the family’s notable social and political connections.

3. Recent Behaviour

In the months leading up to his arrest, Mangione reportedly lost contact with family and friends, raising concerns about his well-being. A social media post from October revealed that people were worried about him, suggesting he had been out of touch for an extended period.

4. Arrest Details

Mangione was arrested on December 9, 2024, at a McDonald’s in Altoona, Pennsylvania, after being recognised by a customer. He was found in possession of a ghost gun, a silencer, and multiple fake IDs, including one used to check into a New York City hostel.

5. Charges Filed

Mangione has been charged with murder in connection with the shooting death of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson, who was killed on a Manhattan street. In total, he faces five charges, including criminal possession of a weapon and forgery.

6. Family’s Reaction

Following his arrest, Mangione’s family expressed shock and devastation, stating that they were praying for Brian Thompson’s family. They also noted that they were unaware of the details surrounding the incident beyond what had been reported in the media.
