Leaders of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the South-West geopolitical zone have affirmed a resolve to do all possible within its power to win the forthcoming governorship elections in Osun and Ekiti states.
This is as the party leaders in the zone aligned themselves with the Southern Governors Forum that the next president should come from the South.
The party leaders affirmed this resolve at a zonal caucus meeting hosted by Governor Seyi Makinde at Oyo Government House, Agodi, Ibadan, on Tuesday.
Some of the leaders present at the caucus meeting were former governors, Olagunsoye Oyinlola (Osun) and Olusegun Mimiko (Ondo); Ayodele Fayose (Ekiti); former deputy governor of Ekiti state, Professor Olusola Eleka; party chieftains, Chief Olabode George and Honourable Ladi Adebutu.
Also in attendance were Senator Abiodun Olujimi; Senator Francis Fadahunsi; PDP deputy national chairman (South), Ambassador Taofeek Arapaja; South-West PDP zonal chairman, Mr Soji Adagunodo; party’s zonal secretary, Rahaman Owokoniran; Oyo State PDP chairman, Hon Dayo Ogungbenro; wife of former Oyo governor, Mrs Mutiat Ladoja.
The list of attendees also included, the Chief of Staff to the Oyo State governor, Honourable Segun Ogunwuyi; Deputy Chief of Staff to the Oyo governor, Abdulmojeed Mogbonjubola; Executive Chairman, Pacesetter Transport Service, Prince Dare Adeleke.
Reading the meeting communiqué, the party’s South-West zonal chairman, Mr Soji Adagunodo added that the caucus also expressed keenness that all dispute resolution mechanisms be explored to ensure unity of the party in the zone.
The meeting also demanded equitable distribution of federal positions and appointments among all geopolitical zones, while reiterating its stand on the imperativeness of restructuring the country.
The communiqué read: “We, the PDP in the South West believe in the corporate existence and unity of Nigeria.
“The unity of the South West is a non-negotiable issue. To this end, we demand that all dispute resolution mechanisms should be on the front burner.
“The South-West zone is in support of the Southern Governors Forum that the next president of the federal republic of Nigeria should come from the South.
“The zone commends the only PDP governor in the zone, Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State for his infrastructural and development strides in the state
“The zone has agreed that we should do everything possible within our power to deliver Osun and Ekiti states to the party in their forthcoming off-season governorship elections.
“The zone is desirous of fairness, justice and equity in the distribution of federal positions and appointments and will support all efforts geared towards national cohesion through equitable distribution of federal positions and appointments amongst the geopolitical zones of the federal republic of Nigeria.
“The South-West reaffirms its position on restructuring of Nigeria.”
