We use car jack as gun to rob road users ― One chance robbers

Four members of a ‘one chance’ robbery gang who were arrested by the police in Lagos State have narrated how they use a car jack to rob their victims.

The quartet of Andrew Valentino, Tony Onwoluwe, Adesoji Oluwafemi and Idoko Michael were a few days ago arrested by the operatives of the Special Anti Robbery Squad of the Lagos Police Command, who were led by the officer in charge of the unit, CSP Kehinde Johnson.

Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Hakeem Odumosu who confirmed the arrest of the suspects to journalists said Valentino allowed his Uber to be used by the gang for a robbery operation.

During his confession, Valentino said his vehicle initially broke down and had no money to repair it, adding that he met the other three members at a bar house where he went to drink.

“After we had fixed the car, I went back to Idoko. That was how we started the operation, we always operated on Ajah Lekki road alone. After which Adesoji and Onwoluwe joined us in the deal.”

“Whenever we pick passengers from Ajah coming to Lekki or any part of the state and we get to deserted places, we would then threaten the passengers with a tyre jack which we strike against iron to make it look like corking a gun,” the suspect said.

The suspect also stated that the victims would surrender while they dispossess them of their money, phones and other valuable and speed off after pushing them out of the vehicle.

Another member of the gang, Idoko said: “I approached him (Valentino) and we became friends and later started the one chance operation. Before I decided to venture into one chance business, I was into barbing salon business, but when my shop was demolished at Ikate. I had nothing doing anymore. I had the plan of doing a one chance business but the only problem I had was how to get a vehicle for the operation.”

Idoko said: “Valentino and I would sit at back as passengers while Oluwafemi would drive and Onwoluwe will hold the tyre jack at the front sit as if he was also a passenger.

“Unknowingly, whenever a passenger enters the car, the driver would then tell Onwoluwe to cock the gun. Onwoluwe would then use iron to hit the jack as if he was cocking the gun truly and we will then asked the person to bring out his/her Automated Teller Machine (ATM) card.”

CP Odumosu said that the suspects would be charged to court as soon as investigations are concluded on the activities.
