The National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) has dissociated itself from the violent clash involving transport union members in Oyo State.
The union, in a statement signed by its Deputy National Secretary, Alhaji Suleiman Musa, stated that the NURTW had been proscribed by the Oyo State government since May 31, 2019.
The NURTW also disclosed that the man who was appointed by the state government to control motor parks in the state’s Parking Management System (PMS), Mukaila Lamidi, popularly known as Auxillary, had been expelled from the transport union since 2011.
The association in the statement said: “NURTW is miffed by the persistent reports linking the union with Governor Seyi Makinde’s appointed chairman of the Parking Management System (PMS), Mukaila Lamidi, popularly called Auxiliary.
“The union is once again distancing itself from the atrocities committed by any individual.”
NURTW also emphasised that Governor Makinde had proscribed the union in the state since May 31, 2019.
“Hence, the union viewed the persistent reports linking it with the alleged activities of the governor’s appointee as unacceptable and urged the Oyo State government to do the needful in order to prevent avoidable clashes resulting in wanton destruction of properties and loss of lives,” the union added.
The statement described the NURTW as a body of law-abiding individuals making a living in the transport sector and averse to all forms of violent activities capable of putting their source of livelihood in jeopardy.
“The NURTW equally appeals to the media and the general public to stop attributing the excesses of the Park Managers of the Oyo State government to the NURTW which remains committed to promoting and sustaining the peace at all times,” the union added.
