Children of God who walk in God’s light ought to know what is pleasing to the Lord. Knowing what pleases God, we should preoccupy ourselves with doing it, with a view to ensuring that we make God happy.
This will and pleasure of God can be discovered in the place of prayer and Bible study. In His word, God already declared our mandate in this world. The word of God says,
Matthew 5:14 – 16 “You are the light of the world. A city that is set on a hill cannot be hidden. Nor do they light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a lampstand, and it gives light to all who are in the house. Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works and glorify your Father in heaven.
God expects you to shine His light in your generation. This demand from God exists in the present tense. In other words, it is something you should do now and continuously. Do not make the mistake of thinking that God only wants you to shine His light sometime in the future. No. He wants you to shine His light today. He wants you to shine His light now. That is why He sent you His word through Prophet Isaiah:
Isaiah 60:1 Arise, shine; For your light has come! And the glory of the LORD has risen upon you.
Children of God have an urgent need to shine His light in this present world. You probably have heard it being said that the darkness in the world is becoming thicker and more palpable by the day. This should not be so. Darkness is not supposed to be an active force. Darkness can only exist in the absence of light. When there is light, darkness should naturally disappear. So, if darkness is getting thicker, it is not time to worry about the darkness, but to worry about the absence of light. The word of God says about our Lord Jesus Christ:
John 1: 4 – 5 In Him was life, and the life was the light of men. And the light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not comprehend it.
Our Lord Jesus, who is this light of the world, has power over darkness. He told us this categorically:
John 8: 12 Then Jesus spoke to them again, saying, “I am the light of the world. He who follows Me shall not walk in darkness, but have the light of life.”
So, Christians should not dread darkness. As soon as light appears, darkness has to recede. Darkness prevails because light is not shining. And the need for light becomes urgent because darkness has become absolutely unacceptable. For this reason, we have no more time to waste. We have allowed darkness and its agents to be comfortable for too long. Now, we are challenged to arise and to shine the light of Jesus Christ. That is a veritable way to please God.
