The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), in Ogun State, has decried the low level of participation by eligible voters in the state, in the ongoing Continuous Voter Registration (CRV) exercise.
Stating this, on Thursday, at the Commission’s headquarters in Abeokuta, the state capital, was the new Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC), Mr Olusegun Agbaje, while briefing newsmen on the activities of the electoral body.
Agbaje hinted that eligible voters are not forthcoming for both the online and physical registration, saying the state at the end of the first quarter recorded the lowest exercise in the South-West zone.
He noted that both Osun and Ondo States which have less population performed far better than Ogun.
Agbaje explained that only 46,937 registered online while 12,231 fully completed their registration compared to Ondo, Ekiti, and the Osun States.
He added that the second quarter of the CVR would commence between 4th October 2021 and December 20, 2021.
“The level of participation of eligible citizens of the state in the first quarter of the Continuous Voters Registration exercise, both online and physical, is very low compared to other states in the country particularly the southwest zones where Ekiti, Ondo, Osun with lesser population performed better.
“At this juncture, I want to inform the good people of Ogun state that the second quarter of the CVR will commence on Monday 4th October 2021 and will end on Monday 20th December 2021, and all those that are eligible and are yet to register are once again enjoined to take advantage of the exercise to enrol as voters.
“For emphasis, those that are eligible to participate in the CVR are Nigerians of the following categories.
“Those who are 18years and above and have not registered before. Registered voters who have had any problem during accreditation for any past election, with either their PVCs or their fingerprints not being read by the Smart Card Reader (SCR).
“Registered voters who want to correct issues with their data, such as misspelt names, dates of birth, etc, need not register afresh but apply for correction and replacement. Registered voters whose PVCs are lost or damaged need not register afresh but apply for a replacement.
“I want to appeal to other relevant stakeholders, the Traditional Rulers, Religious Leaders, political party Leaders, Youths groups, Women Groups and the media and other bodies who have the power to reach to a very large number of eligible citizens across nook and crannies of the twenty local governments of the state,” Agbaje added.
He warned against multiple registrations, saying anyone that violates any relevant section of the law during the exercise would be identified and prosecuted.
