UNICEF has launched a three-year project targeted at improving sanitation, hygiene and safe drinking water in North-West Nigeria.
There focal Local Government Areas each from Sokoto, Kebbi and Zamfara states are to be selected with 300,000 people, and each state is to contribute about N170,000,000.00.
Chief of WASH UNICEF Nigeria, Jane Bevan, highlighted the project is to build community-centred approaches for delivery, operating and managing sustainable WASH services in rural areas.
According to her, “the project will put in place needed infrastructure and support community efforts to eliminate open defecation, adopt proper hygiene behaviours, and improve water quality.
“Twelve thousand pupils in nine focus Local Government Areas will be reached with improved sustainable gender-appropriate water, sanitation and hygiene services. Ten thousand health services caregivers in nine focus LGAs will be reached with same.”
Participants at the one-day event held at Dankani Hotel, Sokoto, discussed budget, implementation strategy, stakeholders roles, responsibilities and sustainability and exit strategy.
State governments are to confirm interest in the project and also confirm acceptance and commitment to meet the state obligations.
Each state is also expected to constitute a project steering committee comprising of key stakeholders, while UNICEF is to provide guidance.
