The British government will consider fresh legislation to remove Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor from the line of royal succession after the ongoing police investigation into his links with Jeffrey Epstein is concluded, a UK official said on Friday.
The official, who declined to be named, said any move to alter the line of succession would require consultation and agreement with other countries where King Charles III, Andrew’s brother, serves as head of state.
The development follows concerns expressed by King Charles III over the arrest of his younger brother, Andrew.
The monarch stressed that due legal process must be followed and that the relevant authorities are handling the matter.
In a statement, the king said, “I have learned with the deepest concern the news about Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor and suspicion of misconduct in public office. What now follows is the full, fair and proper process by which this issue is investigated in the appropriate manner and by the appropriate authorities.
“In this, as I have said before, they have our full and wholehearted support and co-operation. Let me state clearly: the law must take its course. As this process continues, it would not be right for me to comment further on this matter. Meanwhile, my family and I will continue in our duty and service to you all.”
Andrew’s arrest is linked to allegations of misconduct in public office tied to his association with Jeffrey Epstein, after the release of documents by the U.S. government.
Police were reported to have arrived earlier this week at Wood Farm on the Sandringham estate in eastern England in unmarked vehicles.
Thames Valley Police is examining claims that Andrew may have shared confidential government documents with Epstein.
Andrew has repeatedly denied any wrongdoing and has expressed regret over his past friendship with Epstein. Authorities have yet to issue further details on the investigation.
