The United Kingdom government has approved the construction of a large Chinese embassy complex in east London, ending a planning saga that began in 2018 over the Royal Mint Court site near Tower Bridge.
The decision comes despite concerns from residents, MPs, and security experts about potential risks, including espionage and the impact on political exiles living nearby.
According to security services, the risks posed by the enlarged site, which sits near data cables serving the City of London, can be managed.

Officials insisted that no political influence was involved in granting approval, but the green light could help smooth relations ahead of Prime Minister Keir Starmer’s expected visit to China at the end of January.
Beijing has long prioritized the embassy in UK-China relations, with President Xi Jinping raising the matter directly in a phone call with Starmer in August 2024.
