Two middle-aged men, Idowu Salami and Opeyemi Popoola were, on Monday, dragged before Osun State Magistrate Court for beating an assistant Superintendent of Police, Adeleke Adewale blue-black on the 8th of September, 2020.
The two defendants who equally said to have threatened to kill the police officer, reportedly punched him while performing his lawful duty.
The police prosecutor, Rasaq Olayiwola told the court that, the defendants and others now at large were on the 8th and 9th of September 2020 at Oja-Oba Police Station conspired among themselves to beat up Assistant Superintendent of Police.
The duo, according to the police prosecutor further “stole four Singlets valued N1, 200 property of one Francis Ezekwere, threatened to kill him and even destroyed one of his singlets valued N300.”
They (defendants) were first arraigned on September, 10th,2020 before the court on six counts of conspiracy, assault, stealing, malicious damage and the offences committed by the defendants and others now at large.
The offences however said to be contrary to and punishable under sections 516, 390(9), 356(5), 86(1) and 451 of criminal code cap 34 Vol. II Laws of Osun State of Nigeria 2002 but were granted bail before the resumption of the case on Monday.
In their defence, the defendant pleaded not guilty to the charge against them and their counsel, Barr Kehinde Adepoju made an oral application on their behalf and prayed the court to allow them to continue enjoying the bail granted them in the past.
In his ruling, the Magistrate, Asimiyu Adebayo agreed with the counsel request by allowing the defendants to continue enjoying the former bail condition.
