Twin suicide bombings hit Gwoza, kill 7, injure 16 others

Tragedy struck in Gwoza town, Borno State on Saturday, when a female suicide bomber attacked a wedding venue, killing six guests and injuring 16 others.

The bomber, a young mother in her 20s, carried a baby on her back and blended in with the crowd before detonating the explosive device.

An eye witness told Sunday Tribune that the victims were rushed to the General Hospital Gwoza for medical attention.

Meanwhile, another suicide bomber disguised as a mourner struck at the burial ground where the victims were being laid to rest, claiming the life of one person and adding to the devastating toll to seven.

A curfew has been declared in Gwoza with immediate effect, forcing residents to stay indoors and avoid public gatherings.

Speaking with Sunday Tribune, Police Public Relations Officer in Borno, Kenneth Daso, confirmed the incident.

The attacks have raised concerns about the security situation in the region, with many calling for increased measures to protect civilians from such violent acts. As the people of Gwoza mourn the loss of their loved ones, they also demand answers and action from the authorities.

The incident serves as a grim reminder of the ongoing security challenges facing Borno State and the need for sustained efforts to combat Boko Haram terrorists and ensure the safety of all citizens.

Sunday Tribune gathered that the attack was said to have occurred at a busy motor park known as Marrarraban Gwoza.

Borno State Commissioner of Police (CP), Yusuf Lawal, who spoke on the incident later, explained that the attack was carried out by a female suicide bomber.

Lawal said that he was informed by the Divisional Police Officer in Gwoza that at least six people were killed with 15 others who were injured were rushed to the hospital.

An eyewitness who identified himself as Buba disclosed that the suicide bomber targeted a wedding ceremony.

Buba said that the attack shattered the joy and celebration of the ceremony, leaving families and loved ones in mourning.

Muhammed Kasim, another witness, said that the attack happened around 1:30 p.m.

“We heard a very loud sound of explosive, accompanied with dust; then we saw bodies on the ground.

He said that several victims were evacuated to the hospital while security agencies were deployed to the area immediately after the explosion.
