Tech for children

Many children, especially those from rural or underprivileged households, think that technology (tech) and its products are not for them. They believe tech is for adults, and they can only have access to it when they grow up. A few who currently have access to it do not know how to utilise it effectively to their own benefit.

On the other hand, there are many ways that good tech usage is enhancing children’s development, learning, and future success.

Interestingly, children as young as three to four years old can benefit from tech education with guidance from parents and teachers. But tech knowledge and benefits increase with age, as children develop greater independence and technical skills.

Parents and teachers can ensure tech and its products are safe for children by focusing on content quality, maintaining adult engagement, setting clear boundaries, and prioritising educational and creative uses over passive entertainment consumption.

Because of their young age and their limited knowledge, there are specific types of tech tools or products that are good for children. They include interactive educational software, creative tools, programming platforms, and collaborative learning environments that show the most consistent positive outcomes.

Benefits of tech for children include access to creative tools, global audiences, and inspiration from diverse creative communities that can motivate and guide their artistic development and future aspirations.

In most cases, many children seem to be more interested in the entertainment aspect of tech than the educational aspect, which is understandable at their age. In this situation, however, their guardians can start with their interests and gradually introduce educational elements. Many games and entertainment platforms offer learning opportunities when used with adult guidance and discussion.

Parents and teachers can know if their children are experiencing the benefits of tech by looking for increased curiosity, improved problem-solving skills, creative expression, social connections, and confidence in tackling new challenges both online and offline.

The growing presence of tech in children’s lives, from their first year through their teens, is a double-edged sword. While technologies are neutral, how they are applied and how children are exposed to them can be either positive or negative.

The impact of tech on children becomes increasingly difficult to gauge as the pace of technological innovation increases. However, the question is not whether tech for children has benefits — it is understanding how to maximise those benefits while maintaining a healthy balance.

Parents and children should understand that tech is a tool and its value depends on how it is used. Hence, with proper guidance, tech becomes a powerful ally in raising confident, capable, creative children ready for future success.
