The theme for this year’s Teachers Day is “The transformation of education begins with teachers”. UNESCO chose it to honour teachers’ efforts throughout the COVID-19 pandemic. It served as an urgent plea for immediate action to make sure that teachers have the support that they require to reinvent their teaching and get recognized for their vital role.
Deborah, an advocate for incorporating technology into the classroom, showed extraordinary foresight by training teachers at Corona School in January 2020 on the use of Microsoft tools and other conferencing applications for online classes and meetings. This action aided her colleagues to seamlessly transition to online teaching during the COVID-19 lockdown period where they utilized Microsoft Teams, Zoom, PowerPoint, and other tools to effectively teach across a distance.
Deborah Modupe Adegbulugbe considers teaching to be a way of life, not just a profession. Deborah has over seven years of experience encouraging young minds, especially girls, to motivate and promote a positive perception of students towards science education in Nigeria.
“It’s not just about teaching concepts; it’s about opening up worlds of possibility,” Deborah explains with a smile. “When students see what is possible in STEM education, they do more than learning—they dream.”
As STEM Education Coordinator for the Science Teachers Association of Nigeria (STAN), Lagos Chapter, she pushed for innovative teaching methods and inspire other teachers across the state. Deborah, a teacher at Corona School Victoria Island in Lagos and a STEM Ambassador for Across Atlantic Development Ltd Nigeria demonstrates professionalism and innovation at all levels, motivated by her belief that every child deserves the opportunity to grow, learn, unlearn and relearn.
Her deepest motivation is to inspire girls to imagine themselves as future scientists, engineers, and inventors in Nigeria. Deborah has consistently pushed to eliminate the barriers that frequently discourage females from studying STEM courses.
On this Teachers’ Day, Deborah’s story serves as a reminder of the significant impact that a dedicated teacher can have. She is shaping not only the minds but also the future of every child, preparing a generation of Nigerian students to face the challenges of a changing world with confidence and innovative thinking.
As we celebrate the Nigerian teacher’s dedication today, it’s a good time to celebrate our own outstanding Deborah as she stands out as a leader, innovator, and real inspiration to the Nigerian child, her work in promoting STEM education is providing a platform for a brighter future across the country.
To all Nigerian teachers,
Happy Teachers’ Day!
