The FCT Directorate of Road Traffic Services (DRTS) otherwise known as Vehicle Inspection Office (VIO), on Monday, impounded 61 vehicles during a raid on commercial motorcyclists plying one-way and those wrongly parked in the metropolis.
In particular, DRTS officials, who were accompanied by joint security personnel, stormed AYA roundabout, Mogadishu Cantonment and Nyanya axis of Abuja-Keffi expressway as early as 8 am and went after Okada riders, plying one-way from Masaka, Mararaba to AYA roundabout.
Also, the Taskteam took its operation to Wuse Zone 4, and removed and impounded about 15 cars, which were taken to its facility in Wuye District.
Speaking at the end of the exercise, the head of the FCT DRTS Taskteam, Adamu Shehu Maiwada, that about 46 motorcycles, consisting of private, commercial and delivery bikes plying one-way and conveying passengers were impounded.
Maiwada explained that the raid aims at riding the city of threats to lives and property from the operations of commercial motorcyclists and other prohibited areas of the nation’s capital city.
He noted that there are increasing accidents and sometimes death, due to reckless operations of the commercial motorcyclists in the area.
He said: “Today (Monday), we started with Okada riders, plying one-way from Masaka, Mararaba to AYA roundabout that’s why we launched this operation fire for fire.
“We have over 46 motorcycles apprehended today. So far, since we started this operation first week of this month, we have apprehended about four hundred and sixteen motorcycles.
“We have been doing this job and we also tell them that what they are doing is illegal, and people that patronise them, should desist from doing such.
“It’s a continuous exercise, and our honourable Minister, Malam Muhammad Musa Bello has given us authority to do our job without fear or favour, so as to rid Abuja of the menace.”
On the Wuse Zone 4 operation, Maiwada said “we had warned them last week because we noticed that in every area of the business environment, people park vehicles indiscriminately.
“We went to warn them that they should remove all the wrongly parked vehicles. But we went there today, and nothing changed, and we removed and impounded about 15 vehicles, which were taken to our office.
“We will keep them for now, as the Magistrate will decide their fate when we arraigned in the Mobile Court tomorrow,” he stressed.
