A low UTME score can be disappointing, but it does not necessarily mean the end of a university admission journey. Several alternatives are available for candidates who do not meet the cut-off marks of their preferred institutions.
In this article, Tribune Online highlights practical options that candidates can explore after obtaining a low UTME score.
Change your institution or course
One of the most common options available to candidates is the JAMB Change of Course or Institution process. Candidates who fail to meet the requirements for highly competitive courses or universities may consider switching to institutions with lower admission criteria or changing to related courses with less competition.
Consider state universities and newer institutions
Admission competition is often higher in federal universities and popular institutions. Some state universities and recently established universities may have lower cut-off marks depending on the programme and available admission slots.
Candidates should carefully review admission requirements and available courses before making any changes through JAMB.
Enrol for IJMB
The Interim Joint Matriculation Board (IJMB) programme remains one of the most popular alternatives to UTME. The programme usually lasts about one academic session and allows successful candidates to gain Direct Entry admission into 200 Level in participating universities.
Many students choose IJMB because it provides another pathway into university without relying solely on UTME scores.

Explore JUPEB programmes
The Joint Universities Preliminary Examinations Board (JUPEB) programme also provides a Direct Entry route into university admission.
Candidates who successfully complete the programme may apply for admission into 200 Level in participating universities across Nigeria. JUPEB is recognised by many universities and has become a popular alternative for candidates seeking admission opportunities.
Apply for part-time programmes
Some universities offer part-time programmes that may have different admission requirements from regular full-time courses. For candidates determined to begin tertiary education immediately, part-time programmes may provide another route into higher education while allowing flexibility for work or other commitments.
Explore distance learning opportunities
Distance learning centres have expanded significantly in recent years. Several Nigerian universities now offer accredited distance learning programmes that allow students to study remotely. These programmes may provide an alternative for candidates who are unable to secure admission through the conventional route.
