Sokoto govt distances self from official using derogatory language against Danfodiyo

Sokoto State governor, Ahmed Aliyu, has condemned in strongest terms the state government official for his unfortunate and demeaning remarks against the Islamic religion leader, Sheikh Usman Dan Fodiyo.

Recall that in a video currently in circulation across the state ahead of the forthcoming bye-election with one federal house of representative and two state assembly seats to be determined in the state, the said civil servant while campaigning for his candidate made the remarks.

A statement signed by the chief press secretary to the state governor, Abubakar Bawa, and made available to newsmen on Monday evening said the state government while condemning the statement also dissociated itself from such remarks.

“The attention of the Sokoto State Government has been drawn to a video clip circulating in the social media in which Alhaji Abba Shehu Tambuwal, an officer of the Sokoto state Government, made some unfortunate remarks, demeaning the exalted status of our revered religious leader and reformer, Sheikh Usman Dan Fodio.

“The Sokoto State Government wishes to condemn the remark in the strongest terms and dissociate itself from it.

“The Sokoto state Government hereby reaffirms its belief in the teachings and ideology of the legendary Sheikh Usman Danfodiyo and respects the institution which he represents.”

The statement further said that the government therefore strongly advised people to avoid making references to such revered personalities, except as examples of best behaviour and practice.

“The State Government will investigate the circumstances that led the officer to make such unfortunate remarks, and take appropriate action to prevent a recurrence.”
