Nigeria Union of Pensioners (NUP), Oyo State chapter, has called on the state government to be sensitive to the plight of pensioners, with a view to alleviate their sufferings.
The union noted that “many of the pensioners are dying untimely as a result of their inability to purchase prescribed drugs for their health maintenance.
“Pensioners have become endangered species in the country, as a result of unpaid arrears and gratuities”.
These were contained in a press statement made available to the Nigerian Tribune and signed by the chairman, Pa Gbadegesin Akande and secretary, Mr Olusegun Abatan, respectively.
The statement also stated that this year’s Pensioners’ Day lecture will be delivered by Professor Moses Akinola Makinde, Director General/Chief Executive Officer, Awolowo Centre for Philosophy, Geology and Good Governance, with the theme: “Nigeria’s much neglected senior citizens”.
The Jumat service will be held at the state secretariat, Ibadan, on December 9, and Sunday service at Christ Church, Mapo, on December 11.
