Security agents suspected to be men of the Nigeria Police Force have alledgedly shot dead Elizabeth, the daughter of HRH Eze Agwu Nwaukpa, a traditional ruler in Onicha local government area of Ebonyi State.
Tribune Online reports that the princess was shot in front of her father’s palace at Enuagu Onicha when the the security agents invaded the area and shot sporadically in an attempt to arrest another youth.
An eyewitness who gave his name as Peter Nwali expressed worry why security agencies would be shooting on air in an environment that has over Hundreds of person around.
“I am still surprised that, in this era, security agencies will shoot anyhow in a public place like this. The young princess was attending to me because I wanted to buy banana from her before the security men started releasing gunshots. All of us there started running for our safety.
“We gathering together again after they had left when we saw the girl on the floor in a pool of her blood. I don’t know what our country is turning into that lives do not matter to people that are supposed to protect us again,” he lamented.
A brother to the deceased and correspondent of SUN Newspaper in Abakaliki, Prince Chijioke Agwu, told Nigeria Tribune that “Policemen came to my village, Enuagu Onicha Igboeze in Onicha Local government area of Ebonyi State today, 8/9/2021 to harass residents. In the millieu, they shot and killed my younger sister who was selling fruits at the junction.
“She died in my car at Hausa Quarters while moving her from the village to Abakaliki.”
A former House of Reps member, Chief Linus Okorie, in a Facebook post concerning the incident said: “This young girl of about 25, a hardworking youth and daughter of HRH Oshimili Agwu Nwukpa, peacefully plying her legitimate trade of selling fruits at Onuafor Enuagu, Onicha Igboeze; was gruesomely gunned down by reckless ‘security operatives’ this evening. She was hit by bullets from the guns of these goons while attending to her customers in her shop.
“While some say that the reckless shooters were policemen from Onicha Command Isu, other eyewitnesses insist that they were EBUBEAGU operatives that came in an unmarked white hilux van from Isu to arrest a certain coffin maker for unclear allegations.
“Whichever group is responsible for this crime, it is one attack too many on the peaceful people of Onicha Igboeze; and the atrocity must be fully investigated and prosecuted.
Meanwhile, the police spokeperson in the state, DSP Loveth Odah, assured the deceased’s family that the pepertrators will be unmasked and arrested.
She said: “This is very sad and unacceptable. Pls, dear brother Chijioke Agwu take heart. I have informed the police authority of your complaint and we are seriously on it to unravel if the team that exhibited this unprofessional conduct are actually police officers.”
