Russia has again rejected the idea of deploying NATO troops to Ukraine, following US-led efforts to bring the war to an end.
The UK has suggested that foreign troops might be sent to Ukraine once a peace agreement is in place. But Russia’s foreign ministry spokeswoman, Maria Zakharova, said in Moscow that Britain was seeking “an escalation” with such proposals and was pushing NATO members towards a dangerous point, warning that a wider conflict could follow.
She was responding to comments by British Prime Minister, Keir Starmer, who said he was prepared to deploy troops as part of security guarantees for Ukraine.
“We reiterate our repeatedly expressed position that we deny any scenarios that envisage the deployment of a military contingent to Ukraine with the participation of NATO states, which could lead to an uncontrollable escalation of the conflict with unpredictable consequences,” Zakharova said.
Russian President, Vladimir Putin, during and after his meeting with US President Donald Trump in Alaska last week, said he wanted to see the war end.
Tribune Online reports that Trump on Monday disclosed that Russia has agreed, in principle, to accept security gurantees for Ukraine as part of ongoing efforts to end the war.
Trump described the development as a “significant step” that could pave the way for peace after more than two years of conflict.
