Residents of Aerodrome estate, Samonda, Ibadan have sent a Save our Soul plea to the Oyo State governor, Mr Seyi Makinde over the siting of a gas plant in the residential estate.
The residents who staged a protest at the site of the construction of the gas plant wondered if really government and regulatory agencies indeed approved of the construction within the residential area.
Led by Vice Chairman, Aerodrome estate homeowners and residents, Professor Mojisola Atalabi, the residents said they were wary of the imminent danger in siting of a gas plant within their residential estate hence their protest.
The residents lamented that the construction work has continued despite a letter from the Department of Petroleum Resources (DPR) suspending work on the gas plant.
Speaking, Atalabi urged the state governor to wade into the matter bearing in mind people’s right to life.
She said, “We have our hears on the ground and the owner of the plant is boasting that we can not do anything because they have money, connections and political backup.
“We wrote to the government; we protested, we went to DPR, we went to Ministry of Lands, Ministry of environment, and even Ministry of Energy. We were told that something will be done but the next thing we see is the resumption of work at the site, and they are working both day and night.”
A resident in the estate, Mr Akinkole Babalola questioned why the government would give approval for a gas plant to be sited in a residential area not unaware of the risk and hazard associated with such.
He wondered whether the gas plant passed the suitability test of the DPR before proceeding with construction.
“We wrote letters and backed it up with documents to convince the government of the illegality of the gas plant in the area and the government promised to do something about it, but till now, nothing has been done.
“We have sent a letter to the Ministry of Physical Planning and also the DPR to know what has transpired to know the condition upon resumption of work in the site,” Babalola said.
He however appealed to the state government to consider the safety of lives above other factors.
