Reps to lay report on 2022 budget December 14 ― Kalu

Published by

Facts emerges, on Thursday, that the report on the 2022 Appropriation bill being considered by various Standing Committees of the House of Representatives will be laid on Tuesday, December 14, 2021.

Chairman, House Committee on Media and Public Affairs, Hon Benjamin Kalu, disclosed this in Abuja during the post weekly legislative activities.

While giving an update on the 2022 budget, Hon. Kalu who allayed the fears of many Nigerians assured that the House is on course.

He said: “as you know we are winding down for the end of the year holiday and you know what we’ve been bought with recently, the budget. May have asked privately, are you sure this year’s presentation would be done early enough in order to ensure that the January-December calendar will not be messed up with.

“And my answer has always been determined, we are committed to ensuring that this year’s own will not be different from the previous years.

“So tentatively we would be laying the report on the budget on the 14th of December, tentatively. I am sad so because if there’s any little extending it one day before or one day after.

“So let’s be hopeful, everything goes as planned. As it is most of the Committees have sent in their reports about what they have done so far with the MDAs, so we’re not lacking in any way.

“The Appropriation Committee are busy going through all the reports of the Committees to make sure that the envelope for every ministry, agency or department are in order with what has been provided for them.

“We are on course with regards to the budget and the calendar is very dear to us, and we are going to ensure that it’s not different from the previous ones,” Hon Kalu noted.

He assured that the Appropriations Committee is working round the clock to tidy up things with a view to ensuring that the report is laid on the 14th December 2021.

While reacting to question on the controversy trailing the refusal of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Asset Management Corporation of Nigeria (AMCON) and Nigerian Security Printing and Minting to defend their 2022 budget proposals in breach of the President’s directive and the provisions of the 1999 Constitution (as amended), Hon Kalu observed that House will not hesitate to invoke extant powers as provided by the 1999 Constitution (as amended).

He said: “I pity such MDAs I say so because Mr President who is the head of the Executive is against such disposition because he left a standing order that all invited to make presentations of their budgets must attend.

“So you are not only disobeying the instruction of the Chief Executive of the country, you are going against the piece of legislation that empowers the Parliament to invite you to do what is known to law.

“So, there are still options open to the Parliament when such situation arises and in an extreme position, we will invoke such powers but now, I think they are making use of all available windows to take care of that,” the House Spokesman noted.
