Reps invite Lai Mohammed over Twitter ban; to probe Igangan killings

The House of Representatives on Tuesday resolved to investigate the decision of the Federal Government to ban operations of Twitter in Nigeria.

Speaker of the House of Representatives, Honourable Femi Gbajabiamila, disclosed in his address on resumption of plenary after two weeks of break.

The Speaker said the relevant House Committees of Communication, Justice and Legal Matters as well as Information are to submit a report within 10 days to enable the House take an informed decision on the ban.

He explained that while Twitter has been an important means of communication and business for younger generation of Nigerians, the government has a responsibility to ensure it is not used to undermine national security.

According to him, the investigation is to determine whether due process was followed in making the decision.

The committee would also consider the legal frame works upon which the Federal Government made the decision.

The Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, is also to be invited to brief the House on the decision.

This came just as the House resolved to probe the recent killings of innocent people at Igagan community in Ibarapa area of Oyo State

This followed the adoption of a motion of urgent national importance moved by the member representing Ibarapa Central/Ibarapa North of Oyo State in the House of Representatives, Honourable Ajibola Muraina

Moving the motion, the lawnmaker condemned the attack on Igangan community which led to the killing of some residents of the community.
