The Pension Transitional Arrangement Directorate (PTAD) has held a follow-up meeting with the National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA) to fine-tune the modalities for kick-starting health insurance coverage for pensioners.
The NHIA team collaborating with PTAD on the rollout of the health insurance was reportedly led by the Acting. Director, N.C. Makwe and was supported by Dr K. Eteng.
The NHIA team, among other things, presented the modalities and timelines to actualise the enrolment of PTAD pensioners drawn from across the four operational departments.
Also, the discussion focused on plans to organise pensioner sensitisation in the pilot states of Kaduna and Oyo, to make it easier for the onboarding process for the beneficiaries, as stated by PTAD on its verified X (formerly Twitter) handle.
The Executive Secretary/Director General of NHIA, Professor Mohammed Sambo, stated recently that the most effective care for aging persons is to give them unqualified access to affordable and quality healthcare.
He noted that coverage for pensioners is a critical aspect of attaining universal health coverage, adding that the government is favourably disposed to ensuring that persons who have spent a better part of their lives serving the country should have access to care without further financial burden.
Explaining how the initiative will be funded, Professor Sambo said that healthcare must be paid for because it is impossible for it to be free, adding that support from relevant government agencies would be required to achieve sustainable financing.
The Nigeria Police Force (NPF) and the Department of State Services (DSS), according to him, were already paying for healthcare coverage of their retirees, stressing that funding healthcare for pensioners was critical to institutionalising the initiative and making it enduring.
