In an initiative to mark the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence, Project JOYRIGHT, a sponsored project by EndFGM, took centre stage, directing its focus on the insidious practice of Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) in the heart of Abeokuta, Ogun state.
Venturing into the Olomore community, JOYRIGHT extended its reach to schoolboys, schoolgirls, teachers, and stakeholders, fostering an environment of dialogue and awareness as part of the ongoing commemoration against FGM and gender-based violence (GBV).
Among the diverse audience, the project left an indelible impact on hearing-impaired students.
The Project Manager, Busayo Soyebo, emphasised that FGM constitutes a direct violation of the rights of girls and women. Notably, she highlighted Ogun state’s relatively low prevalence of FGM, attributing the potential rise in such practices to settlers from neighboring states where this harmful tradition persists. Soyebo sounded a clarion call for the active involvement of FGM activists and media to address this emerging concern.
Adding their voices to the narrative, media personalities Kikelomo Obabi and Mrs Elegbede shared insights about survivors of FGM. They urged survivors not to shy away from sharing their stories with the media, emphasising that this openness could serve as a powerful tool to amplify their voices and bring attention to the urgent need for change.
