Lagos State Environmental and Special Offences Unit (Taskforce), on Thursday, said it impounded 410 motorcycles popularly called okadas in the last one week, vowing that it would not rest on its oars until penchant disregard for traffic rules and regulations reduced drastically among commercial motorcyclists in the metropolis.
Taskforce boss, CSP Shola Jejeloye, gave this vow, in a statement made available to newsmen, emphasising that the agency would do all within its power to enforce the restriction of motorbikes on Lagos highways and bridges.
Giving the breakdown of the figure, Jejeloye stated that 300 okadas were impounded on prohibited routes last week while 110 were seized, on Wednesday.
According to him, officials of the agency carried out enforcement in Isolo, Ojodu – Berger, Ojota, Lagos Island and Surulere last week while the enforcement drive of the agency was also extended to 2nd Rainbow, where it seized 110 motorbikes, on Wednesday.
Jejeloye, while expressing the commitment of the agency to do all that is within its power to enforce the restriction of motorbikes on Lagos highways and bridges, urged Lagosians to desist from patronising motorcyclists plying highways, maintaining that “it’s better to be safe than to say sorry.”
The Taskforce boss noted that it was disturbing that motorcyclists were refusing to comply with the Lagos Traffic Law restricting them from operating on highways and bridges, adding that, the law was made in the best interest of the general public.
He stated that enforcing the law was like assisting recalcitrant motorcyclists from killing themselves and endangering the lives of other road users.
