Post-election Violence: Police arrest 57 suspects in Zamfara

The Zamfara State Police Command under the leadership of CP Kolo Yusuf has disclosed the arrest of fifty-seven (57) suspects who took part directly or indirectly in the post elections violence in the state.

Addressing newsmen on Saturday evening at the police headquarters in Gusau, the command public relations officer SP Mohammed Shehu said the command has recovered some looted property in the state.

“The violence erupted following the announcement of the Governorship election result in the State and police have recovered some of the looted and vandalised properties in the state”.

“It could be recalled that Police detectives personally led by the Commissioner of Police CP Kolo Yusuf psc, earlier arrested four suspects and recovered some of the looted and vandalised property worth millions of Naira which were showcased to the press and later charged to court and remanded in prison. As a follow up to the ongoing effort 17 more suspects were arrested in the state “.

He further revealed that additional Exhibits were also recovered which included two (2) semi-silenced generators belonging to the Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs, Gusau, two (2) standing Refrigerators, Vandalised doors, windows, tables, chairs, electric wires and different calibres of electronics, sets of cushion chairs, Forty (40) Pieces of woman wrappers, Burglarproof for windows and pillar reinforcement rods.

“In the course of the investigation, suspects confessed to the commission of the offence and further narrated how they invaded APC Campaign offices belonging to Senator Kabiru Marafa and Senator Daniya and looted property worth millions of Naira”.

He maintained that effort is being made to arrest their collaborators and charge them in court for prosecution.

Meanwhile, a 25-year-old notorious armed bandit Suleiman Balarabe who operates in Zamfara state and its environs was arrested.

“On 29th March 2023 at about 0330am, Police operatives while on patrol acted on intelligence information and arrested the above-named suspect who was already on the wanted list of the Police for Banditary, Kidnapping and other heinous crimes against the good people of Zamfara State”.

He disclosed that in the course of the investigation, the Suspect confessed to a series of attacks and kidnappings on different communities in Zamfara State where millions of Naira were collected as ransom from the Relations.

“The suspect who further confessed to bearing GPMG during their operations mentioned some of his allied which the police detectives are working assiduously to arrest while the discreet investigation is ongoing”.
