Operatives of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command of the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) have arrested a fake Wing Commander donning a Nigerian Air Force uniform.
The suspect is said to have confessed have used the uniform to defraud several unsuspecting members of the public.
The new FCT Police Commissioner, CP Sunday Babaji, who paraded the fake NAF Officer along with seven other suspected criminal suspects during the CP’s maiden meeting with the media, stated that the suspects were arrested at various locations in the metropolis following tip-offs.
According to him, the fake NAF Officer, Jack Bemdoo, 32 was arrested at Durumi Park after surveillance for impersonating personnel of the Nigeria Airforce.
The suspect confirmed to newsmen that he used the Air Force kit he acquired illegally to intimidate, extort money from frightened members of the public.
Two of the suspects were electric cable vandals who had been vandalizing Abuja Electricity Distribution (AEDC) cables in the FCT metropolis and its environs in recent.
CP Babaji said they were arrested by Police operatives from Bwari Division and were residents of Mpape and Masaka respectively.
According to him, “the suspects who confessed to the crime were arrested while vandalizing AEDC ‘high tension’ aluminium cables at Shere axis a boundary between Mpape and Bwari.
“Preliminary investigation reveals that they belong to the syndicate suspected to be sabotaging the effort of the Federal Capital Territory Administration to provide electricity for FCT indigenes along Shere-Bwari axis.
“Effort is in top gear to arrest other members of the syndicate at large. Exhibits recovered from them are over 20 yards of high tension aluminium cables.”
Also paraded were two suspected cult members, Ebuba Mbani 33 years and Sunday Atu 26 years, who were to have been arrested along Gudu axis and they confessed to being members of a cult group known as ‘Neo Black’ movement of Africa.
The CP stated that the operatives of the Anti-Cultism Unit who arrested the suspects recovered one locally-made pistol and one jackknife as exhibits.
He added that the Command’s anti-violent Crime Section also arrested 36 years old Ndifereke Samuel along Garki, Area 1 axis for “once-chance” robbery during the period under review.
According to him, the suspect, who met his waterloo while attempting to rob a victim, stated that he posed as a taxi driver and robbed his unsuspecting passengers while the exhibits recovered from him include a sharp knife and a Toyota Corolla.
He added that similarly, acting on a tip-off, operatives of the Anti-Violent Crime Section arrested 24 years old Michael Itopa that used a toy gun to rob his victims of their valuables.
According to him, “the suspect who was identified by one of his victims was arrested in Garki while trying to escape, adding that a toy gun was recovered from him as an exhibit.
“Relatedly, on 9th August 2021, operatives of the Anti-Violent Crime Section arrested one Justice Ezeogu 36 years with six bags of dried leaves suspected to be marijuana along Nyanya axis of the FCT.
“The suspect confessed to being a merchant of Indian hemp. He will be handed over to the NDLEA for further investigation.”
Addressing the media during the parade, CP Babaji recalled that he assumed office on Friday, August 6 as the 28th Commissioner of Police in the FCT, following the promotion and redeployment of his predecessor, AIG Bala Ciroma to zone 7 Abuja.
He disclosed that the fundamental responsibility of the command “remains to ensure the delivery of quality security services to residents and stakeholders of the Federal Capital Territory.”
