The National Assembly and State Houses Assembly Elections Petition Tribunal sitting in Jos on Monday dismissed the petition filed before it by the candidate of People’s Democratic Party (PDP), Hon. George Daika against the victory of Professor Nora Daduut of All Progressive Congress (APC) for lacking in merit.
It would be recalled that Hon. George Daika approached the tribunal on the premise of irregularities in the election that produced Professor Daduut as the winner of Plateau South Senatorial By-Election in December 2020.
Delivering judgment on Monday, the three-man tribunal headed by Justice DA Akhobe said that the petition filed by Daika lacked merit.
According to the chairman of the tribunal, the petitioner “achieved nothing by calling 15 witnesses as they did not add value to his case as their shreds of evidence were not credible to hold water,” adding that the petitioner could not prove his case beyond a reasonable doubt.
Reacting to the victory, Sen. Daduut who spoke to newsmen expressed her heartfelt appreciation to the people of Plateau South for the mandate given to her, adding that she was highly honoured and humbled for the trust placed on her.
She said: “For the ruling of the tribunal, I give thanks to the Almighty God. The victory is for the people of Plateau South who trooped out en-masse last year to elect me as their representative at the upper chamber. I want to assure them that today’s ruling will further spur me to work relentlessly on their behalf to help address challenges facing our constituency.
“The ruling is also another testament that judiciary upholds fairness and justice. I want to say that with the judgment of today, we are once again reassured of the impartiality of the judiciary as they continue to uphold the ethos of equity and rule of law. I have the conviction that the ruling will further strengthen democracy not only in Plateau State but Nigeria as a whole.
“The victory of today is for all of us and for my brother Hon. George Daika I want to say there’s no Victor and there’s no vanquish. Let’s join hands to advance the development of Plateau South,” she said
She further thanked Governor Simon Lalong and the leadership of APC in the state for their support.
