Chairman, Nigerian Legion, Oyo Command, Julius Ogunkojo, has advocated for the recruitment of more men into the Armed Forces for them to be able to efficiently police the nation’s huge population.
Alongside the imperativeness of an increase in the number of personnel, Ogunkojo also identified it as important to boost the morale of the armed men by including an increase in their salaries and allowances.
Ogunkojo made this call on Monday during the Grand Finale/Laying of Wreaths for the 2024 Armed Forces Remembrance Day celebration held at Remembrance Arcade, Government House, Agodi, Ibadan.
Speaking further, Ogunkojo implored the government and well-meaning Nigerians to come to the aid of both serving and retired soldiers
Furthermore, he charged the Chief of Army Staff, Lt. Gen. Taoreed Lagbaja, with providing opportunities for both retired and serving soldiers to interact so that they could share ideas for better policing of the country.
Ogunkojo said: “The best way to engage us is to follow the formula established by former Chief of Army Staff, Lt Gen Farouk Yahaya.
In every geopolitical zone of the country, Yahaya made arrangements that the retired soldiers should meet with the serving ones to interact on issues. I want the present Chief of Army Staff to continue in that light.
“Besides, we need to recruit more; the number of personnel serving in the Armed Forces is too low compared to the US and China.
We need to recruit more, considering our population. We also need to boost their morale and increase their salary.”
The event featured the laying of wreaths, the firing of the 21-round volley, reveille, the release of ceremonial pigeons, two minutes of silence for fallen soldiers, and the rendition of prayers, among others.
Present at the ceremony were Governor Seyi Makinde; deputy governor, Bayo Lawal; Speaker of the State Assembly, Adebo Ogundoyin; state Chief Judge, Iyabo Yerima; General Officer Commanding, 2 Division, Nigerian Army, Major General B. A. Alabi; Commander, 2 Division Garrison, Brigadier General U. A. Muazu; Commander, 671 NAF Station, Ibadan, Air Commodore A. G. Akinyimika; and Oyo Commissioner of Police, Adebola Hamzat, among others.
In his remarks, Governor Seyi Makinde appreciated the dedication of men of the Armed Forces to keeping Nigeria safe while assuring support for the families of fallen soldiers.
