Governor Samuel Ortom of Benue State has described the death of the former deputy president of the Senate, Senator Ibrahim Mantu as a painful loss to the nation.
Ortom in a condolence message issued by his Chief Press Secretary, Terver Akase said his death came at a time the country needed his wise counsel and experience which could help to overcome the current security and economic challenges.
The governor described Senator Mantu as a true democrat and patriot who played a vital role in nursing the country’s nascent democracy from 1999 to where it is today.
Governor Ortom stated that the Peoples Democratic Party in particular will deeply miss its former Board of Trustees member who made selfless contributions to the growth, unity and success of the party.
The governor sympathised with the Mantu family, the government and the people of Plateau State and prayed God to grant the former Deputy Senate President eternal rest.
Former Governor of Plateau State, Senator Jonah Jang, described the demise of the former deputy senate president, Ibrahim Nasiru Mantu as a great loss to Nigeria saying the late Senator Mantu was a brave and courageous Plateau elder statesman who stuck in the neck for the interest, growth of the state, not only during his reign as deputy president of the senate but throughout his entire political career.
Senator Jang in a statement said the late Mantu distinguished himself in politics such that he became a household name whenever the politics of Plateau State and Nigeria was a subject of discussion.
He added that the deceased was reputed to have stood for and supported any plateau man who aspired for anything at the national level adding that his love for the state and for his people will remain indelible in the history of our dear state.
“He was a very loyal, dedicated and committed party man who remained in the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) until his demise. At a time where it was the practice to leave one party for the other to satisfy inordinate political ambitions, Senator Mantu had shown us that ambition does not override loyalty and commitment to the ideals and tenets that one should hold dear, even in the face of loss of political power.
“The late Senator had risen to greater heights in his political career, yet, was an embodiment of humility, a devout Muslim, community leader and a father to many.
“His enormous contributions to the development of his people, Plateau State and the nation at large will forever be cherished and remembered.
“He lived an exemplary life worthy of emulation and the vacuum he left behind will be difficult to fill, not just in Pyem land, Plateau state but the nation at large,” he said.
Also, the Peoples Democratic Party, (PDP), in the North Central Zone, has expressed shock over the death of a former Deputy Senate President, Ibrahim Nasiru Mantu, who died in the early hours of Tuesday, August 17, 2021.
According to a statement signed by the PDP North Central Publicity Secretary Arc. Suleiman Mohammed the deceased contributed immensely to the socio-political development of Plateau State and Nigeria as a whole.
“His influence as a Senator representing Plateau Central Senatorial zone attracted a lot of developmental projects and programmes for the people of Plateau and this quality representation endeared him more to his people.
“As a stakeholder of our great party, the PDP in the North Central Zone, Senator Mantu always availed himself with his wealth of experience and knowledge, and also rendered his voice as an advocate of unity, social cohesion and tolerance not just for the running of the Party but for the overall wellbeing of his people of Plateau, the North Central region and Nigeria at large.”
