Barely two weeks the new security outfit Operation Delta Hawk was inaugurated, officials of the team have shot a woman identified as Amaka Onanaja dead in front of her shop in Okpanam area of the state capital.
Report from the area indicated that the incident occurred on Tuesday 22nd December 2020, when the team, was allegedly chasing two young boys driving a tinted Lexus Jeep who refused to stop for routine checks when flagged down.
It was further learnt the armed officers allegedly opened fire in a bid to stop the car but unfortunately, a stray bullet hit the woman in her shop.
One of the boys, identified as Joshua Ona, 30 years old, was seriously injured and taken to the general hospital, Okpanam while the Lexus car was recovered.
However, the state police command on Wednesday regretted the incident, saying it was condemnable.
According to the state Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Onome Onowakpoyeya in a statement, the police have no hand in the killing, assuring the family of the late woman, the matter would be discreetly investigated.
