Ondo State Government has commenced a massive evacuation exercise of beggars, destitute and miscreants from the streets of Akure, the state capital.
This followed the directive from the state governor, Mr Rotimi Akeredolu, who directed the state Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Development to flush the state off these elements.
The Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Development, Mrs Foluke Tunde-Daramola, who disclosed this to newsmen, expressed the government’s determination to eradicate street begging and all forms of nuisances off the state capital.
Tunde-Daramola noted that beggars on streets and roads of the Ondo State capital constituted a considerable nuisance to law-abiding citizens, who are entitled to go about their businesses without any fear or hindrance.
The Permanent Secretary led her team round the Akure metropolis to evacuate the target people to a designated place for possible rehabilitation.
Speaking at the end of the exercise, Mrs Tunde-Daramola said removing destitute and people in that category from the street would prevent hazardous consequences.
She added that their presence in the state has been a source of concern to the government saying their evacuation was necessary to prevent them from constituting dangers to the society.
