The Ondo State chapter of the Nigeria Medical Association (NMA) has raised the alarm over the mass exodus of medical doctors under the state government payroll over poor condition of service.
The doctors noted that the irregular and modular payment of salaries of the medical doctors is responsible for the crisis in the state health sector and hostile work environment.
Addressing a news conference to mark the 2021 physicians’ week, the state chairman of NMA, Dr Stella Adegbehingbe said the impact of the exodus of doctors and other health care personnel on the people of the state is better imagined.
Adegbehingbe who implored the state governor, Mr Rotimi Akeredolu to make the work environment conducive and provide the required and necessary equipment for them.
She also urged the state government to embark on massive employment of health personnel in secondary and tertiary healthcare levels in the state.
She said, “The impact of the exodus of doctors healthcare workers to the neighbouring states and beyond is unimaginable. We now have fewer doctors and nurses to attend to an ever-increasing population.
“This year has been filled with a lot of challenges and crises in the health sector of the state and in our country coupled with COVID-19 pandemic.
“The crises in the state health sector have been worsening by the irregular percentage of salaries being paid and the hostile work environment.
“This has resulted in the withdrawal of services at different times and a mass exodus of doctors and other health care workers
“We salute the courage and commitment of our colleagues and other healthcare workers who are still committed in giving their best to the good people of the state despite all these challenges”.
The doctors in the state also frowned at the growing refuse dumps along the streets of Akure, describing it as an invitation to epidemic.
“There are noticeable uncleared and growing refuse dumps along the streets of our cities which have become issues of public health concern. We suggest that this development should be attended to urgently.
“We pray that Ondo and her people will not be confronted with an avoidable epidemic of diseases, which may cause great loss to the government and the masses.”
