Over the last few years, African football has been developing on a monumental level. Mohamed Salah has cemented himself as a Premier League legend for Liverpool, with the Egyptian hitting 200 goals for Jurgen Klopp’s side, whilst Sadio Mane won the Golden Boot during his time at Anfield and Mohamed Kudus has lit east London up since joining West Ham United from Ajax this summer.
The Africa Cup of Nations showcased the best football the continent had to offer, and while Nigeria fell short in the final, losing 2-1 to the Ivory Coast thanks to a late Sebastian Haller goal, the Super Eagles have plenty to be proud of throughout their run in
While they might be stumbling in their pursuit of 2026 World Cup qualification, Nigeria still boasts a plethora of exciting talent. The recent international break saw Nigeria beat Ghana and lose to Mali, showcasing their inconsistency, but with the hints of magic that make them one of the strongest African sides.
The next tournament is their best chance in years of reaching the competition’s latter stages, with a host of players plying their trade in Europe’s strongest leagues. With that in mind, let’s take a look at some of Nigeria’s key players and how their careers are going. Read on to find out more.
Victor Osimhen
Let’s start with the country’s star striker, Victor Osimhen of Napoli. The 25-year-old has been one of the most sought-after forwards in the world for a couple of seasons now, and with Champions League football still looking unlikely in Naples next term, we could see the Nigerian on the move, with a number of clubs interested in his signature.
Osimhen scored 31 goals last season as Napoli won their first Serie A title in 33 years, but have fallen short this term and are currently seventh, with Inter dominating on the run in for the Scudetto. It means the door will likely be open for the Nigerian to move on over the summer, with Paris Saint Germain needing a replacement for Kylian Mbappe, as well as Arsenal and Chelsea providing options for a move to the Premier League.
Victor Boniface
Bayer Leverkusen are enjoying a wonderful campaign in the Bundesliga, and many of the best new betting sites in the UK are backing Xabi Alonso’s side to end Bayern Munich’s run of 11 consecutive league titles, currently 13 points clear and unbeaten at the time of writing.
The champions-elect have been a figure of consistency thanks to their tight-knit squad, which includes Nigerian Victor Boniface. The striker has 10 goals so far this season and provides space for Florian Wirtz in Alonso’s 3-5-2 system, despite injuries halting his progress since the winter break. The Spaniard is full of praise for Boniface, who will be a key component now Alonso has confirmed he is staying in Leverkusen having previously been linked to Liverpool.
“It was special for him (to return) after three months out. He worked hard to get back on the pitch. He wanted to enjoy it with the players. We needed him back,” Alonso said.
Frank Onyeka
There are a number of Nigerians currently playing in England, but with Wilfried Ndidi suffering relegation with Leicester City last season and Alex Iwobi failing to make an impact after leaving Everton for Fulham, Frank Onyeka has made a great impression in centre midfield, perhaps going under the radar a bit for Brentford.
The Bees play an industrious style of football, focused on discipline, running, and transitions, and Onyeka is perfect for providing security to the defence, as well as getting forward to support in attack.
Since signing from Midtjylland in the Danish league, Oneyka has gone on to make over 60 appearances for Brentford and has been a great addition to their squad and now partners Ndidi in the Super Eagles starting line-up, demonstrating his quality. At just 25 years old, he has plenty of years ahead of him and could be a key part of the squad that plays at the World Cup.
