Award winning music sensation, Niniola Apata, popularly known as Niniola, sister of the popular award winning singer Teni, released a new song at the weekend, entitled “Omo Rapala”, which has drawn various opinions from the public.

The title, no doubt, is associated to the Fuji icon brand, Alhaji Abass Akande Obesere, who has been bearing the nickname “Omo Rapala” over two decades ago. The name according to Obesere, now addressed as Agbaakin Abobagunwa of Yorubaland, connotes smartness.

However, since the song hit the internet, many fans of Alh. Obesere started tagging the Fuji icon on on Instagram on his official handle (@officialobesere) on Nimiola’s Instagram page asking him to share his view on the title.

R put a call through to Alhaji Obesere and he reacted. Asked what was his view about the new development on social media where a name associated to his brand has been used as a title on a trending song, he said: “I have been seeing hundreds of notifications on my phone both on social media and as text informing me of the new hip hop song carrying one of the names people know with over two decades ago. Anyway, for me I see it as a way of appreciating the concept and my brand. I was forced to listen to the song and it has a tone to how I got the name.

He then shared a short story how he got the name; “I got the name Omo Rapala when I was in secondary school. My seniors would take me to the field and made me sing for them. I would sing for them but when I see they were carried away, I would sneak out of their midst and they would think I was still singing but before they knew what happened I had run away.

“So they used to say, this boy is very smart, Orapala mo wa lowo, that is, I was full of different ways of always outsmarting them. Then when I go to shows, many would not know I had gone because the crowd was ready to tear you into pieces.
