Northern speakers call for quick implementation of legislature autonomy in states

 

The 19 Northern States Northern Speakers Conference under the aegis of Northern Speakers Forum(NSF) converged in Kaduna at the weekend to discuss sensitive and critical issues that are affecting the region.

Declaring the maiden conference open, at Deluxe suites Hotel Kaduna, the protem chairman of the conference and Kebbi state House of Assembly Speaker Rt Hon lsmaila Abdulmumini Kamba enumerated the challenges facing the region.

Kamba listed insecurity, COVID -19, financial autonomy of state legislature and judiciary, rape/domestic violence and above all high level of unemployment among the teeming youths as critical issues the bedevilling the North.

After many hours of serious deliberations by the nineteen northern chief lawmakers, the conference came -up with far-reaching recommendations which were read to newsmen in Kaduna as communique of the one-day event.

While condemning in strong possible terms the unending insecurity situation in the north, the speakers commended the efforts of federal and state governments in fighting the menace and called on the Heads of nation’s security agencies to restrategised in seeing to the end of deadly Boko Haram sect in the Northeast and bandits in the Northwest as well as other escalating herdsmen /farmers crisis in North Central parts of the country.

The conference in unequivocal terms also saluted the courage of Mr president, Muhammadu Buhari for signing the Executive Order 10 into law which allows for financial autonomy for state legislatures and judiciary.

According to the the communique, this would definitely strengthen arms of governments as well as deepening of democracy at the state levels which is in compliance with the provision of the nation’s constitution.

The communique also called on the state governors in the country as true democrats to immediately implement these constitutional provisions in their respective states without further delay so as not to impede or prejudice our nascent democracy.

The conference also said states Assemblies will soon promulgate laws with punitive measures on rape and domestic violence to curb the ugly trend in the region.

They also extended their profound gratitude and appreciation to the Kaduna state speaker for successfully hosting the one-day event.

Also, the one-day brainstorming session also saw the emergence of Rt Hon Nasiru Magarya, the Speaker of as the vice-chairman Northwest of the Northern Speakers Forum(NSF)

The Northern Speakers Forum will also meet in the next two weeks time in the nation’s capital Abuja to further strategise on the full implementation of their communique by the relevant stakeholders.
